6-Year-Old Girl Dies After Oldsmar Crash at Tampa Road Intersection

Oldsmar intersection near Tampa Road and St. Petersburg Drive after a serious crash investigation

A serious crash at Tampa Road and St. Petersburg Drive in Oldsmar remains under investigation after a 6-year-old girl died from her injuries.

A 6-year-old girl has died after being critically injured in a two-vehicle crash at Tampa Road and St. Petersburg Drive in Oldsmar. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on April 30, 2026, and the child died from her injuries on May 6, 2026.

The crash remains under investigation. PCSO reported that speed appears to be a factor, while impairment does not appear to be involved. Tampa Bay 28 and WFLA also reported on the fatal Oldsmar crash.

What PCSO Says Happened in the Oldsmar Crash

PCSO said the collision happened at approximately 4:42 p.m. on April 30, 2026. Investigators said 27-year-old Jayanna Clark was driving eastbound on Tampa Road in a 2015 Nissan Altima as she approached St. Petersburg Drive. At the same time, 52-year-old Christy Proctor was driving a 2021 Tesla Model 3 westbound in the turn lane on Tampa Road, preparing to turn south onto St. Petersburg Drive.

Investigators said both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time and collided in the middle. Proctor was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Clark was also transported with minor injuries. Two juvenile passengers in Clark's vehicle were taken to the hospital: a 4-year-old boy with serious injuries and a 6-year-old girl with life-threatening injuries.

In its May 7 update, PCSO said the 6-year-old girl had died from her injuries and that the 4-year-old boy had been released from the hospital. Next of kin was notified, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Why Fatal Intersection Crashes Require a Careful Investigation

When a crash happens in the middle of a busy intersection, liability is not always determined by the impact point alone. Investigators may need to review signal timing, vehicle speed, turn-lane movement, witness statements, roadway cameras, vehicle data, skid marks, debris fields, crash reconstruction findings, and the final traffic homicide or major accident investigation report.

That matters here because PCSO has not announced a final fault determination. The agency has stated that speed appears to be a factor and that impairment does not appear to be a factor, but the full investigation is still developing.

In Florida, drivers must operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under the conditions. Florida's unlawful speed statute also requires speed to be controlled as necessary to avoid colliding with another vehicle, person, or object on or entering the roadway.

Florida law also addresses left-turn movements. Under Florida's vehicle turning left statute, a driver intending to turn left within an intersection must yield to vehicles approaching from the opposite direction when those vehicles are within the intersection or close enough to create an immediate hazard. Whether that rule applies to a particular crash depends on the full facts, including the signal phase, speed evidence, vehicle positions, and reconstruction findings.

What a Fatal Child Passenger Crash Can Mean Under Florida Law

When a child passenger dies after a motor vehicle crash, the civil case may involve both the crash investigation and Florida's wrongful death laws. The Florida Wrongful Death Act applies to claims involving deaths caused by wrongful acts, negligence, default, or breach of contract or warranty.

Florida's wrongful death right of action may allow a claim when the person who died would have been entitled to bring a claim had death not occurred. The claim is not filed separately by each family member. Under Florida Statute 768.20, the action is brought by the decedent's personal representative for the benefit of the survivors and estate.

Potential damages in a Florida wrongful death case are controlled by Florida Statute 768.21. Depending on the facts, recoverable damages may include categories such as lost support and services, medical expenses, funeral expenses, and certain survivor damages. In cases involving the death of a minor child, the damages analysis requires careful review of the family relationship, medical history, and applicable statutory categories.

Florida also has strict filing deadlines. Under Florida Statute 95.11, negligence actions and wrongful death actions generally fall within a two-year limitations period. Families should not wait for every report to be finalized before speaking with an attorney because critical evidence can disappear quickly.

Evidence That May Matter After a Fatal Oldsmar Intersection Crash

In a serious or fatal crash investigation, evidence can make the difference between uncertainty and accountability. Important evidence may include:

  • Traffic signal timing records
  • Nearby business, intersection, or residential camera footage
  • Vehicle event data recorder information
  • Tesla vehicle data, if available and relevant
  • Cell phone records, if distraction is questioned
  • Witness statements
  • Scene measurements and crash reconstruction findings
  • Medical records connecting the crash injuries to the death
  • Insurance coverage for each involved vehicle
  • The final PCSO or traffic investigation report

This is especially important when speed is identified as a possible factor. Speed can affect stopping distance, reaction time, impact force, and whether another driver had a realistic opportunity to avoid the collision.

A Serious Oldsmar Crash With Pinellas County Impact

Oldsmar sits near several heavily traveled Pinellas County and Tampa Bay corridors. Tampa Road is a major east-west route connecting drivers through Oldsmar, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor, and nearby areas. When a serious crash happens at a key intersection, the investigation may involve not only driver behavior but also the broader roadway environment.

For families dealing with catastrophic injuries or the death of a loved one, the legal process can feel overwhelming. A Florida car accident lawyer can help review the crash facts, identify available insurance coverage, and preserve evidence before it is lost. Our Thoughts Are With the Family

No legal discussion should overshadow the human loss involved. A 6-year-old child died after a crash that also injured a 4-year-old passenger and two adults. For any family, that is devastating. For a parent or loved one, the days after a fatal crash can be overwhelming, especially when the investigation is still developing.

Families in this situation are often left with urgent questions about what happened, whether speed or failure to yield played a role, whether traffic cameras captured the crash, what insurance coverage exists, and who has the legal right to bring a claim. Those questions should be answered through evidence, not assumptions.
