Two Children Hospitalized After Pickup Truck Crashes Into Tampa-Area Apartments

A silver pickup truck sits embedded in the collapsed staircase and exterior wall of a Tampa apartment building at 903, with yellow caution tape strung across the scene, depicting the aftermath of a crash in which children were hospitalized after a vehicle struck a residential building.

Two children were hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday morning after a pickup truck crashed into two apartment units on Palm Bay Drive in Hillsborough County, according to WFLA News Channel 8. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. People injured inside a home when a vehicle strikes it may still have the right to pursue compensation from the at-fault driver for medical expenses, property damage, temporary housing, and other losses.

Two children were seriously injured Tuesday morning when a pickup truck crashed into two apartments in the Palm River-Clair Mel area of Hillsborough County.

According to WFLA News Channel 8, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue received several 911 calls around 9:38 a.m. on July 28, 2026. Callers reported that a truck had crashed into an apartment building on Palm Bay Drive.

Fire officials said the pickup truck appeared to back into one apartment before moving forward and striking a second unit.

Two Children Taken to the Hospital

Two children were inside one of the apartments at the time of the crash. Emergency crews transported both children to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Firefighters evacuated the affected buildings and searched the apartments to make sure no one else was trapped or injured. Crews also rescued a dog from one of the homes.

No firefighters or other emergency personnel were reported injured.

Hillsborough County Code Enforcement was called to inspect the damage and determine whether the buildings were safe.

For the families involved, this was more than a traffic accident. Their homes became an emergency scene in a matter of seconds. The focus now should remain on the children’s recovery and the families who were displaced by the crash.

The Cause of the Crash Remains Under Investigation

Authorities have not publicly identified the driver or said what caused the truck to crash into the apartments.

Investigators will likely review whether driver error, a medical emergency, mechanical failure, distraction, or another issue contributed to the crash. Until that investigation is complete, it would be unfair to speculate about exactly what happened.

When a Vehicle Crashes Into a Home

People do not have to be inside another vehicle to have a valid injury claim after a crash. A person injured while inside a home, apartment or business may still have the right to pursue compensation from the responsible driver and applicable insurance companies.

Depending on the circumstances, a claim may include compensation for:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization
  • Follow-up care and rehabilitation
  • Pain and emotional trauma
  • Damage to furniture and personal property
  • Temporary housing and relocation expenses
  • Future medical or support needs

Because two children were seriously injured, any insurance or legal claim should be handled carefully. The medical evidence, accident investigation, and available insurance coverage will all matter.

The cause of the Palm Bay Drive crash remains under investigation.
