Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Crash Corridor Report: Top Crash Locations in 2026

Map of Hillsborough County showing plotted high level crash corridor locations in 2026.

Crash-location data from January through April 2026 shows repeated accident clusters along major Hillsborough County corridors, including US 301, Big Bend Road, Fletcher Avenue, Waters Avenue, Dale Mabry Highway, and Causeway Boulevard.

The highest-crash location in the reviewed Hillsborough County data was S US Highway 301 and Big Bend Road, with 39 accidents. Other repeated crash corridors included Fletcher Avenue, Waters Avenue, Dale Mabry Highway, Big Bend Road, Causeway Boulevard, Bloomingdale Avenue, and Bruce B Downs Boulevard. Our Tampa car accident team compiled HCSO's Crash data, and it revealed more than just a few isolated accident locations. When the same roads and intersections appear again and again, they often point to larger traffic patterns, high-risk car accident corridors, and areas where Hillsborough County drivers may need to use extra caution.

This report reflects HCSO crash-location data reviewed through April 27, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m. Crashes handled by other agencies, including the Tampa Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol, are not included in this dataset.

Please note: the data shown and discussed here reflects only the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Crash Data, this does not include crash data from the Tampa Police Department or the Florida Highway Patrol. These data points will be added in a future blog once the data is collected from TPD and FHP and analyzed.

After reviewing and combining four months of Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office crash-location data from January through April 2026,  several patterns stood out. The highest accident counts were concentrated along major commuter routes, commercial corridors, fast-growing suburban roads, and intersections where heavy traffic meets frequent turning movements.

The top crash locations were not randomly scattered across the county. Many of them clustered along familiar roadways, including US Highway 301, Big Bend Road, Fletcher Avenue, Waters Avenue, Dale Mabry Highway, Causeway Boulevard, Bloomingdale Avenue, and Bruce B Downs Boulevard.

This report explains which corridors appeared most often, and what these patterns may mean for Hillsborough County drivers.

What the Crash Patterns Say About Hillsborough County Roads

1. US Highway 301 Is One of the County’s Most Repeated Crash Corridors

US Highway 301 appeared several times among the top 50 crash locations.

Notable locations included:

  • S US Highway 301 / Big Bend Road — 39 accidents
  • S US Highway 301 / Bloomingdale Avenue — 33 accidents
  • S US Highway 301 / Boyette Road — 16 accidents
  • S US Highway 301 / Paseo Al Mar Boulevard — 11 accidents
  • S US Highway 301 / Symmes Road — 9 accidents

US 301 is not just represented by one high-crash intersection. It appears throughout the reviewed data as part of a larger crash corridor through eastern and southern Hillsborough County.

For drivers, US 301 can be challenging because it serves several roles at the same time. It is a commuter route, a commercial corridor, a truck route, and a local access road for neighborhoods, retail centers, and schools. That creates constant conflict points where vehicles are stopping, turning, changing lanes, and merging.

The data suggests that drivers should be especially cautious along US 301 near Big Bend Road, Bloomingdale Avenue, Boyette Road, Paseo Al Mar Boulevard, and Symmes Road.

2. Big Bend Road Shows a Clear South County Crash Pattern

Big Bend Road appeared repeatedly in the data, especially around Riverview and SouthShore-area traffic routes.

Key Big Bend-related locations included:

  • S US Highway 301 / Big Bend Road — 39 accidents
  • Big Bend Road / Lincoln Road — 17 accidents
  • Big Bend Road / Simmons Loop — 9 accidents
  • N US Highway 41 / Big Bend Road — 8 accidents

Big Bend Road has become one of the most important transportation corridors in southern Hillsborough County. The area has seen significant residential and commercial growth, and that growth brings more daily traffic.

The crash pattern along Big Bend Road likely reflects the reality of a corridor carrying more vehicles than many drivers may expect. More commuters, more school traffic, more turning vehicles, and more business access points can all increase the likelihood of collisions.

For Hillsborough County drivers, Big Bend Road should be treated as a high-attention corridor, especially near US 301 and Lincoln Road.

3. Fletcher Avenue Is a Major North Tampa Crash Corridor

The second-highest location in the reviewed data was in Tampa:

E Fletcher Avenue / Bruce B Downs Boulevard — 36 accidents

Fletcher Avenue also appeared several more times:

  • E Fletcher Avenue / N 42nd Street — 15 accidents
  • E Fletcher Avenue / N 22nd Street — 13 accidents
  • E Fletcher Avenue / N 15th Street — 12 accidents
  • E Fletcher Avenue / N Nebraska Avenue — 10 accidents

This shows a strong pattern across the Fletcher Avenue corridor in North Tampa. Fletcher Avenue carries heavy traffic near the University of South Florida area, medical facilities, apartment communities, shopping centers, restaurants, and major commuter routes.

The intersection at Fletcher Avenue and Bruce B Downs Boulevard is especially important because it combines two high-volume roads. Drivers in this area often deal with congestion, frequent lane changes, pedestrian activity, buses, and vehicles turning into or out of businesses.

Fletcher Avenue is one of the most repeated crash corridors in the northern part of Hillsborough County.

4. Waters Avenue Appears Again and Again

Waters Avenue was one of the most frequently repeated roads in the top crash locations.

Notable Waters Avenue locations included:

  • Hanley Road / W Waters Avenue — 34 accidents
  • N Dale Mabry Highway / W Waters Avenue — 23 accidents
  • Benjamin Road / W Waters Avenue — 19 accidents
  • N Himes Avenue / W Waters Avenue — 14 accidents
  • Anderson Road / W Waters Avenue — 13 accidents
  • Twelve Oaks Boulevard / W Waters Avenue — 10 accidents

This repeated appearance suggests that Waters Avenue is one of the clearest crash corridors in the reviewed Hillsborough County data.

Waters Avenue connects residential neighborhoods, shopping areas, office corridors, schools, and major north-south roads. It also includes many access points where vehicles enter and exit driveways, side streets, parking lots, and commercial centers.

Those conditions can increase the risk of:

  • Rear-end crashes
  • Sideswipe crashes
  • Left-turn collisions
  • Red-light crashes
  • Intersection crashes
  • Pedestrian and bicyclist conflicts

For drivers in Tampa and Town ’N Country, Waters Avenue should be considered a corridor where extra attention is needed.

5. Dale Mabry Highway Remains a High-Traffic Crash Route

Dale Mabry Highway also appeared multiple times in the top 50.

Key locations included:

  • Ehrlich Road / N Dale Mabry Highway — 26 accidents
  • N Dale Mabry Highway / W Waters Avenue — 23 accidents
  • N Dale Mabry Highway / W Idlewild Avenue — 11 accidents
  • N Dale Mabry Highway / South Village Drive — 9 accidents
  • N Dale Mabry Highway / W Lambright Street — 8 accidents

Dale Mabry Highway is one of Tampa’s busiest north-south roads. It carries a constant mix of commuters, shoppers, commercial vehicles, and local neighborhood traffic.

The crash locations involving Dale Mabry show that risk is not limited to one section. The pattern stretches across multiple intersections where Dale Mabry meets major east-west roads.

For drivers, the biggest risks along Dale Mabry often come from congestion, multi-lane traffic, sudden stops, and vehicles turning across several lanes.

6. Causeway Boulevard and Falkenburg Road Show Commercial-Corridor Risk

The Brandon and eastern Hillsborough County area also showed repeated crash activity around Causeway Boulevard, Falkenburg Road, Adamo Drive, and Gornto Lake Road.

Notable locations included:

  • E Adamo Drive / S Falkenburg Road — 18 accidents
  • Causeway Boulevard / S Falkenburg Road — 16 accidents
  • Causeway Boulevard / Providence Lakes Boulevard — 13 accidents
  • Causeway Boulevard / S Gornto Lake Road — 13 accidents

This area includes shopping centers, warehouse traffic, commuter traffic, and connections between Brandon, Tampa, and major expressway routes.

Commercial corridors often create crash risk because traffic is constantly entering and leaving businesses. Drivers may slow suddenly, cross lanes to reach turn lanes, or misjudge the speed of vehicles around them.

7. Brandon, Valrico, and Bloomingdale Show Suburban Crash Clusters

The data also showed notable crash activity in the Brandon, Valrico, and Bloomingdale areas.

Important locations included:

  • S US Highway 301 / Bloomingdale Avenue — 33 accidents
  • S Kings Avenue / W Lumsden Road — 14 accidents
  • Bloomingdale Avenue / Lithia Pinecrest Road — 11 accidents
  • E State Road 60 / N Valrico Road — 9 accidents
  • Bloomingdale Avenue / Providence Road — 8 accidents

These are busy suburban roads that carry school traffic, shopping traffic, commuter traffic, and neighborhood traffic. Many of these roads were not designed for light local use only. They now function as major travel corridors for growing communities.

Why These Corridors May See More Crashes

The data does not explain the cause of each individual crash. However, the repeated locations share several common features that may contribute to higher accident counts.

High Traffic Volume

Many of the top crash locations are on roads that carry large numbers of vehicles every day. More traffic means more opportunities for driver error.

Heavy Turning Movements

Intersections like US 301 and Big Bend Road or Fletcher Avenue and Bruce B Downs Boulevard involve multiple lanes and frequent turns. Left turns, U-turns, and lane changes can all increase crash risk.

Commercial Driveways and Access Points

Roads like Waters Avenue, Dale Mabry Highway, Causeway Boulevard, and Bloomingdale Avenue have many businesses and parking-lot entrances. Every access point creates another place where vehicles may slow, stop, turn, or merge.

Fast-Growing Residential Areas

South Hillsborough County and eastern Hillsborough County have seen major growth. When roadways serve more residents, schools, and shopping centers, crash patterns often follow that growth.

Driver Distraction and Congestion

Congested roads require constant attention. A driver who looks away for even a few seconds may not notice that traffic has stopped, a light has changed, or another vehicle has entered the intersection.

What This Means for Hillsborough County Drivers

For drivers, the main takeaway is simple: many Hillsborough County crashes are concentrated along predictable corridors.

That does not mean every crash can be avoided. But it does mean drivers should be especially cautious when traveling through the roads that appeared most often in the reviewed data.

Drivers should use extra care when approaching:

  • US 301 and Big Bend Road
  • Fletcher Avenue and Bruce B Downs Boulevard
  • Waters Avenue intersections
  • Dale Mabry Highway intersections
  • Causeway Boulevard and Falkenburg Road
  • Bloomingdale Avenue and nearby Brandon-area roads
  • Big Bend Road through Riverview and SouthShore

At these locations, drivers should expect sudden stops, turning vehicles, lane changes, distracted drivers, and congestion.

Safety Tips for Driving Through High-Crash Corridors

Drivers can reduce risk by adjusting how they drive in these areas.

Leave More Following Distance

Rear-end crashes are common in congested corridors. Leaving extra space can help drivers react safely if traffic stops suddenly.

Be Careful With Left Turns

Many serious crashes happen when a driver turns left across oncoming traffic. Wait for a clear gap and avoid rushing through yellow lights.

Watch for Last-Second Lane Changes

Busy commercial roads often have drivers who suddenly move toward turn lanes or shopping-center entrances. Expect unexpected lane changes.

Avoid Distractions

A quick glance at a phone, GPS, or dashboard can be enough to miss a stopped car or changing traffic signal.

Slow Down Near Intersections

Even when a driver has the right of way, intersections are where many crashes happen. Slowing slightly and scanning the intersection can help.

What To Do After a Crash on a Hillsborough County Corridor

If you are involved in a crash on one of these roads, take the situation seriously. Even crashes that seem minor at first can involve injuries that become more painful later.

After a crash, drivers should consider these steps:

  1. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or the crash is blocking traffic.
  2. Get medical attention as soon as possible.
  3. Take photos and videos of the vehicles, roadway, traffic signals, skid marks, debris, and injuries.
  4. Get names and contact information for witnesses.
  5. Avoid guessing about fault at the scene.
  6. Request or obtain the crash report when available.
  7. Speak with a personal injury attorney before giving a recorded statement to the insurance company.

Crash location matters. If a collision happened at a known high-crash intersection, evidence such as traffic-signal timing, surveillance footage, road design, visibility, and prior crash history may become important.
