FDOT plans new left-turn lanes and two median closures at U.S. 41 and SR 54 in Land O’ Lakes.
FDOT plans to add left-turn lanes and close two directional median openings at U.S. 41 and State Road 54 in Land O’ Lakes. The project remains in design, with construction expected to begin in fall 2027, according to FDOT’s project page.
The goal is to improve traffic flow and safety. Some residents, however, are worried about how the changes will affect the routes they use every day. Tampa Bay 28 reported concerns that closing familiar turns could send more traffic into nearby areas. The station placed the project’s estimated cost at roughly $3.5 million.
What FDOT Plans to Change
The proposed work covers U.S. 41 from Leonard Road to Carson Drive and SR 54 from U.S. 41 to Raden Drive. Along with widening and resurfacing, FDOT’s public meeting notice identifies these changes:
- A third left-turn lane on the north, east, and south legs of the intersection.
- Closure of the median opening used to turn left from eastbound SR 54 onto Raden Drive, with an extended traffic separator and more space for the westbound queue.
- Closure of the median opening used to turn left from southbound U.S. 41 onto Carson Drive.
For drivers who use those openings, the change is specific: those direct left turns would no longer be available. The notice describes restrictions on those turns, not closure of either street.
When Construction Could Begin
FDOT currently expects construction to start in fall 2027. That is a projected start date, not a completion date or a guarantee that the schedule will remain unchanged.
The agency held its public meeting on October 5, 2026, at Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park. Residents can check the official project updates for schedule changes and sign up for email alerts.
Why Residents Are Questioning the Plan
The concern is about more than waiting at a red light. A turn that disappears can change the trip to a home, a store, or a workplace.
Tampa Bay 28 reported residents’ concerns about access and the possibility of congestion shifting to surrounding roads. FDOT described the work as a smaller improvement intended to provide some relief while a larger solution remains separate.
The practical issue is where drivers will go instead. People who depend on the Raden Drive or Carson Drive openings should ask FDOT to explain the intended alternative route for their particular trip. The reporting does not establish that the changes will increase crashes or move congestion to a specific neighborhood.
How This Differs From the Diverging Diamond
The turn-lane project and the larger interchange proposal are separate projects. The fall 2027 construction estimate applies to the turn-lane work.
FDOT’s 2026 interchange study update identifies a preferred alternative with U.S. 41 elevated over SR 54 and SR 597, or Dale Mabry Highway. A U.S. Department of Transportation notice also records final agency actions for that larger project and describes the diverging diamond configuration on SR 54.
Those planning and approval steps should not be read as an announcement that the larger interchange will begin construction in fall 2027.
Where Residents Can Get Answers
The intersection is in Land O’ Lakes. Its reach is broader: FDOT identifies SR 54 as a major east-west connection across Pasco County, linking routes including U.S. 41, I-75, and U.S. 301.
FDOT lists design manager Eyra Cash as the contact for the smaller intersection project at 813-975-6164 and [email protected]. If you have an access concern, identify the driveway or turn you use and ask how that trip would work under the proposed design.
The meeting notice set October 19, 2026, as the deadline for comments to be included in the official meeting record. That date has passed. The project page still lists contact information for questions; ask FDOT how any further feedback will be handled.
