We see it every day on Florida roads: drivers traveling at dangerous speeds. Across the U.S., speeding resulted in 12,151 traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That accounts for 29% of all traffic fatalities. In Florida, speeding and aggressive driving caused 396 fatalities and 850 serious injuries during the same year. These statistics call for increased traffic stops.
How is local law enforcement using increased traffic stops to address speeding?
Sheriff Chad Chronister and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office recently concluded “Operation Southern Slowdown." This is a focused initiative designed to curb speeding, enhance road safety, and prevent car accidents throughout the area.
During the week of July 15th to July 21st, deputies ramped up their presence in high-traffic areas and conducted a total of 4,063 traffic stops. This effort led to the issuance of 301 citations, 3,434 warnings, 85 criminal citations, and 47 arrests.
Sheriff Chronister stressed the importance of safe driving as the region continues to grow.
"Please, give yourself a few extra minutes on your commute. Wear a seat belt. Stop at red lights before turning. Help us keep our residents safe," he stated.
What are the dangers of speeding?
Speeding poses major risks to both the driver and others on the road. It reduces the driver’s reaction time, making it more difficult to avoid sudden hazards, such as a pedestrian crossing the street or another vehicle stopping unexpectedly.
At high speeds, it becomes harder to control a vehicle, especially during emergency maneuvers like swerving or braking suddenly. This can lead to rollovers, skidding, or veering off the road.
Plus, the faster a vehicle is traveling, the more severe the impact will be in the event of a crash. Higher speeds can result in more serious injuries or fatalities, as the force of the collision is exponentially greater at higher velocities.
